June 1st kicked of CPR Awareness Week. Working in healthcare, CPR training is something that is so commonplace it can sometime be taken for granted.

Many of you may know John Whitehead, our NetCompetency®  trainer and product specialist based out of our Knoxville, TN office. John is known for many things – his sense of humor, his fun laugh, and his love of skim milk… just to name a few. Now, we can add hero to that list as well.

Last month, John was participating in a community basketball game when a fellow player went down, not breathing. Suffering from a heart attack, many of the spectators looked on frightened, not knowing what to do. Fortunately, John, who had received his Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification via the American Heart Association’s BLS for Healthcare Providers course was able to step in and perform CPR until the paramedics arrived. “I felt physically and emotionally drained afterwards but was so grateful I had received my BLS certification and knew what to do so I could step in and help him,” says John. The man was taken to a local hospital where he made a full recovery.

70% of Americans feel helpless to act during a cardiac emergency because they don’t know CPR or are afraid of hurting the victim. This CPR Awareness Week do what you can to spread the message of CPR awareness throughout your organization and community.
