Employee engagement. How did a phrase that is so important become so dreaded by so many? The term is now one of the top 20 most hated business phrases being used today. But why?
In too many instances, people feel like employee engagement is something being done to them, rather than for them. It sounds like work that must be done to help the bottom line based on charts, data, and research, rather than something that has true meaning for them as individuals.
So perhaps it is time to change how we talk about engaging employees. Instead of looking at how it helps the company or groups of workers, we need to dig deeper to see what being engaged with work means for the individual.
