Why Recipients Love It

If you don’t have a sweet tooth, I can’t help you with that; but to so many of the recipients this year, this award means much more than a delicious chocolate chip cookie cake. “The award brought awareness to leadership and showed that we are at the top of our game in the education department!” says Jan Wright, HR Staff Development and Training at Great Plains Health in North Platte, NE a recipient of the NetLearning Sweets for Completes award in 2015, “It gave me the opportunity to show leadership that online learning is valuable and we are utilizing our system to its full potential and then some.”

Tracy Perkins, Human Resources Analyst at Ephraim McDowell Health in Danville, KY received the Performance Manager Sweets for Completes award this year, she said that her favorite part of this honor is the “recognition for all of the hard work put into the performance appraisal process over the past year. We work really hard to get our appraisals completed in a timely fashion and this is our icing on the cake,” (pun intended). Another recipient of the award, Daniel Blandford, Employment Supervisor at Owensboro Health in Owensboro, KY tells us that he is going to include these metrics in his performance appraisal.

The Sweets for Completes award represents different types of recognition at each organization; some may use this as a chance to further their career with their supervisor or the leadership team while others use it as a barometer for how efficient their current processes are. And, if you’re just in it for the treats, that’s okay too!

How Do I Get One?

Winning stuff is fun, but winning stuff you can eat is even more fun. So we want to help you and your organization win. Here are a few tips from this year’s Sweets for Completes award winners:

  • Time-to-fill open requisitions – Know your numbers – if your organization is struggling to fill positions in a timely manner, whether it is in one particular department, or across the whole organization – utilize reports from Position Manager to dig into this. Flora Flint, Employment Assistant at Adventist Medical Center in Portland, OR, a recipient of the Position Manager Sweets for Completes award in 2015 recommends, “reaching out to the hiring managers who are not making decisions in a timely manner. This helps you to better understand the unique situations surrounding specific departments and the positions they’re trying to fill.”
  • Behavioral assessment completion – Recruiters and hiring managers should join forces on this one as well; work together to ensure that each applicant is completing the Staff Assessment at the right time. If an applicant has not completed the assessment within a few days, follow-up to see if they have any questions about the job or the organization. Remember to have the interview team utilize the behavioral interview guide and report generated by Staff Assessment to complete an effective interview with each candidate.
  • Performance appraisal completion – Link annual pay increases to the on-time completion of appraisals. Daniel Blandford of Owensboro Health says that they “have merit (annual pay increase based on performance) tied to the performance appraisal. This is the driver of the 82% completion rate as we stress that failure to complete the appraisal on time may result in the employee not receiving merit. We run a weekly report in Performance Manager after the appraisal due date to determine who is outstanding and send reminders to the managers.” While Owensboro Health has not actually withheld a merit increase for delayed performance appraisals, this practice still influences on-time submissions.
  • Course completion – Ensure that your training is primarily available on demand as eLearning courses and that your library of courses is organized appropriately. Jan Wright at Great Plains Health recommends having “your nursing education team members identify if just-in-time training would be better suited online rather than pulling everyone off the floor for a 30-minute training. Have other departments that are training on several subjects put like topics together in a module in NetLearning; it can be easily shared with new staff members as they join.”
